The Knot’s latest research puts the average U.S. engagement ring at about $4,600, with the typical centre stone weighing 1.7 carats. That average has been sliding for years: The Knot recorded $6,000 in 2021, $5,800 in 2022, $5,500 in 2023 and $5,200 in 2024. Other surveys land higher, between roughly $5,200 and $6,500, so treat any single number as a guide rather than a target.
Why rings are getting cheaper and bigger at the same time
Lab-grown diamonds now account for roughly 61% of engagement ring centre stones. Because a lab-grown stone costs about 80% less than a comparable natural one, couples are spending less while choosing larger diamonds. Natural prices have eased too, falling about 14% this year for a 1-carat round.
Where did the salary rule come from?
The idea that a ring should cost a month’s, then two months’, then three months’ salary came from diamond advertising, not tradition. De Beers promoted it through the twentieth century, alongside its famous 1947 line that a diamond is forever. The engagement ring itself is far older: the Archduke Maximilian of Austria’s diamond ring for Mary of Burgundy in 1477 is often cited as the first documented diamond engagement ring.
