What is in Antiquorum’s New York watch auction?
The heart of the catalogue is F.P. Journe. According to Haute Time, the three leading Journe lots are the platinum Tourbillon Vertical Black Series from 2022 (lot 156, $800,000 to $1.4 million), a platinum Centigraphe Souverain with a salmon dial from 2011 (lot 155, $600,000 to $1 million) and a Vagabondage II in 18k pink gold, a limited edition of 68 (lot 152, $500,000 to $800,000).
Around them sit the icons. Antiquorum lists a Cartier Crash New Special Order estimated at $400,000 to $700,000 and a Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman” at $286,000 to $570,000. Haute Time adds a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1R-001 in pink gold with a Tiffany & Co. signed dial (lot 23, $200,000 to $400,000) and a Richard Mille RM 35-02 Rafael Nadal in Carbon TPT from 2017 (lot 153, $150,000 to $250,000). The full online catalogue is open for bidding in the room, online, by phone or absentee.
Why does Antiquorum’s return to New York matter?
Antiquorum was founded in Geneva in 1974 and helped shape the modern watch auction, notably with thematic sales built around a single maison, such as its celebrated 1989 sale marking Patek Philippe’s 150th anniversary. A live room sale in Manhattan signals a renewed push into the American market. “We are thrilled to reconnect with the US market,” the house said, according to WatchPro, which reports that Antiquorum frames the sale as part of a long-term American plan run through its Miami Beach office. For collectors here in Florida, that means a specialist team close to home.
Why are F.P. Journe watches so valuable?
François-Paul Journe, a watchmaker trained in Paris, launched his own brand in Geneva in 1999 with the Tourbillon Souverain, a tourbillon with a constant-force remontoir. His dials carry the Latin motto “Invenit et Fecit,” invented and made, and the promise is literal: Journe designs his own movements, finished in gold, and makes them in small numbers. The Centigraphe Souverain measures time to a hundredth of a second; the Vagabondage series is the house’s playground for unusual displays, with jumping digital hours.
Scarcity, authorship and technical originality have turned Journe into the benchmark of independent watchmaking at auction. In our view, the most telling detail of this October is a direct comparison: Sotheby’s Paris is offering a platinum Centigraphe Souverain from around 2014 (lot 367) at €150,000 to €300,000, while Antiquorum estimates its 2011 salmon-dial example at $600,000 to $1 million. Same reference family, very different expectations. Dial color, year, condition and completeness of box and papers can move a Journe estimate several times over, and the results of these two sales will show collectors exactly how much.
With F.P. Journe, the reference opens the conversation; the dial, the year and the papers decide the price.
Which other watch auctions are happening in October 2026?
It is a full week. Sotheby’s Fine Watches online sale in Paris closes on October 7, led by a steel Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman” reference 6241 from around 1968 with box and papers (lot 368, €120,000 to €260,000). The exotic-dial Daytona remains the vintage chronograph collectors chase most, a legend sealed when Paul Newman’s own reference 6239 sold at Phillips New York in 2017 for $17.8 million.
Bonhams New York closes its online watch sale on October 8, with an H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Tourbillon “Miami,” reference 3805-1202, number 1 of 28, estimated at $50,000 to $70,000 (lot 136), per Haute Time. And Phillips is running The New York Sessions online until October 9: nearly 90 watches led by a Voutilainen 28Sport limited edition at $120,000 to $240,000, with a complete Patek Philippe 5270J set at $80,000 to $160,000, according to WatchPro. Paul Boutros, Phillips’ Deputy Chairman and Head of Watches, Americas, said the sale “reflects the extraordinary momentum we’ve seen throughout the year across our global watch auctions.” We recently looked at the 5270J and other icons on show at Cars of 30A.
For the Collector
- Estimates are not prices: published estimates exclude the buyer’s premium and taxes, so a winning bid costs more. Confirm terms with Antiquorum before bidding.
- Ask for the condition report: for a Journe, original dial, unpolished case and full set matter; for a “Paul Newman,” dial authenticity is everything. Our watchmaker’s checklist for pre-owned watches covers what to ask.
- See it in person: the New York viewing on October 16 and 17 is the moment to handle the pieces with a specialist.
- Compare across sales: the two Centigraphe Souverain estimates and the two “Paul Newman” Daytonas this month offer a rare side-by-side reading of the market.
- A word of caution: strong auction results reflect collector demand at a moment in time; past prices do not predict future value, and no watch is a guaranteed store of value.
