One of independent watchmaking’s most storied designs has a new, far more attainable descendant. On October 30, 2026, Louis Erard introduced the Futur Antérieur, its third collaboration with the French watchmaker Vianney Halter: a 38mm steel watch with two raised porthole dials, two automatic movements and a price of CHF 4,950 before tax, as reported by Monochrome Watches and Wrist Enthusiast.

What is the Louis Erard x Vianney Halter Futur Antérieur?

It is a three-hand watch built like a small piece of sculpture. Two domed sub-dials rise from the dial plate, each ringed with polished rivets in the manner of a diving helmet’s porthole. The lower dial shows hours and minutes with blued steel Halter-style hands; the upper dial carries the small seconds. The Gold version has yellow gold-plated, grained sub-dial plates and a black ostrich strap; the Silver has ruthenium-plated plates and a blue ostrich strap, per Monochrome.

The name is a French verb tense, the future perfect, which describes what will have happened. It nods directly to Halter’s 1998 Antiqua, a watch he once described as a “relic of the future past,” according to Monochrome. Two riveted crowns, their six rivets each plated in yellow gold, and a solid caseback engraved with the edition number complete the picture.

How much does the Futur Antérieur cost, and where can you buy it?

Each watch is CHF 4,950 excluding tax, and the boxed set of both versions is CHF 9,900. Wrist Enthusiast reports availability from October 30, 2026, through Louis Erard and its retailers, and notes that the set comes in a wooden box. US pricing was not published in the sources we read, so confirm the local price and allocation with Louis Erard or an authorized retailer before you commit.

At roughly the price of a well-specified entry-level Swiss automatic, this is one of the few ways to wear a design associated with an independent maker whose own watches trade far higher. For other options in the same bracket, see our guide to the best luxury watch under $5,000.

Why does it use two movements?

Because each porthole needs its own center. Rather than build gearing to move the seconds to a distant sub-dial, Louis Erard placed a compact Sellita SW100 under each one. The SW100 is a small automatic calibre, 17.2mm across and 4.8mm thick, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour; Monochrome and Wrist Enthusiast give a minimum power reserve of 38 hours each, while Revolution lists 42 hours. Even with two movements and a 67-part case, the watch stays under 9mm thick.

There is a practical note for owners. Two movements means two running times to set, and in principle two calibres to service. In our view it is a small price for a dial layout that would otherwise be impossible at this level, but it is worth asking the retailer how setting and servicing are handled.

A watch that looks back to the future, and lets far more collectors share the view.

What is the Vianney Halter Antiqua? A short history

Vianney Halter is a French independent watchmaker who works in Switzerland, and the Antiqua was his first watch under his own name. Shown at the Basel fair in 1998, it was a perpetual calendar whose sub-dials bulged from the case inside riveted frames, a look shaped with the American artist and designer Jeff Barnes; early examples were signed “Halter Barnes,” Monochrome notes. At a time when most fine watches looked to classical models, the Antiqua’s mix of nineteenth-century engineering and science-fiction imagery felt entirely new, and Monochrome counts it among the most influential designs of the avant-garde independent movement.

Halter’s later work kept that spirit, and his watches remain made in small numbers, which is why the Antiqua is so rarely seen. Louis Erard, a Swiss brand known for value-minded mechanical watches, began inviting independent names into its catalogue under Manuel Emch. The first Halter collaboration, a regulator, arrived in 2020 at about EUR 3,500; a second, in 2024, adopted the Antiqua’s asymmetry. The Futur Antérieur is the first to borrow the porthole case itself. Revolution’s Lee Sheng calls it “by far the closest Louis Erard has come to capturing Halter’s design language.”

It also fits a wider pattern we have followed this autumn, from Ressence’s Type 10 DN to the independents on show at WatchTime New York: collectors want individual design, and brands are finding ways to offer it at more than one price point.

For the Buyer

  • Price: CHF 4,950 each or CHF 9,900 for the set, excluding tax, at the time of writing; confirm local pricing with Louis Erard.
  • Availability: 178 of each version and 78 sets, offered through Louis Erard and its retailers from October 30, 2026.
  • Which to choose: the Gold reads warmer and closer to vintage instruments; the Silver, with its blue strap, is cooler and more understated.
  • Wearability: 38mm across and 8.85mm thick, with quick-change strap bars and 50m water resistance; suited to a dress or everyday rotation rather than swimming.
  • Resale: limited editions can be sought after, but past prices do not predict future value. Buy it because you love the design.
