Some watches tell time. This one keeps a secret. At SIAR 2025 in Mexico City, Bvlgari unveiled a serpent of yellow gold, crowned with roses and flecked with the colors of Mexico, that opens its head to reveal a tiny dial. It is the Serpenti Pallini Secret Watch – México Special Edition, the maison’s tribute to Frida Kahlo, and only three exist.

What is the Bvlgari Serpenti Pallini Secret Watch?
It is a high jewelry secret watch: a piece that reads first as a bracelet and only reveals the hour when you lift the serpent’s head. The body winds around the wrist in rows of polished gold beads, the pallini, that give the coil its supple, almost liquid movement. The head is paved in diamonds, set with emerald eyes and crowned with sculpted rose-gold roses. Beneath it waits a small diamond-set dial.
Bvlgari created it as a México Special Edition for SIAR, the Salón Internacional de Alta Relojería, where several maisons presented limited pieces dedicated to Mexico for the fair’s 19th edition.
How does the design honor Frida Kahlo?
Bvlgari drew on Kahlo’s palette and symbolism, and on the garden of the Casa Azul, the cobalt-blue house in Coyoacán where she was born and lived. The roses on the serpent’s head echo the flowers she so often wore in her hair and painted into her self-portraits.
The stones speak in color. Green emeralds, white diamonds and red rubies trace the colors of the Mexican flag. Warm orange spessartites stand for passion and creativity. And the secret dial, hidden until the head is lifted, is framed by the maison as an image of Kahlo herself: an artist who turned pain into beauty.

What gems and movement are inside?
The count is extraordinary for a piece of this size: 681 diamonds of approximately 8.47 carats, two sets of emeralds (46 of about 1.72 carats and 31 of about 1.63 carats), 28 orange stones of about 2.58 carats and 16 rubies of about 1.35 carats. Most reports describe the orange stones as spessartites, a vivid orange garnet; one lists them as yellow sapphires.
Inside beats the BVL 100 Piccolissimo, Bvlgari’s hand-wound calibre measuring just 12.3 mm in diameter, which the maison describes as the smallest round mechanical movement in the world. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of about 30 hours. Each of the three pieces required more than 300 hours of work by hand.
How much does it cost?
Bvlgari has not published a price. As with most one-of-a-few high jewelry watches, it is available on request, and with only three made, the edition is effectively a collector’s appointment rather than a boutique purchase.
A short history of the Serpenti
The serpent has been Bvlgari’s signature since the years after the Second World War, when the Roman house began making coiled snake watches and bracelets in flexible gold. The Serpenti became a symbol of seduction and transformation, and a star of the 1960s, when it found its way onto the wrists of Hollywood icons. Secret watches, whose dials hide beneath a jeweled head, became one of its most coveted forms.
The México Special Edition places that Roman icon in dialogue with a Mexican one. Kahlo, born in 1907 and gone in 1954, turned her own body and suffering into art; the serpent, which sheds its skin to be reborn, is a fitting emblem for her.

The Carat Post’s editor, Karina, attended Bvlgari’s presentation at SIAR México in October 2025 and saw the piece up close. Photographs rarely do a secret watch justice. In person, what strikes you first is the movement of the pallini: hundreds of gold beads that catch the light like scales, scattered with points of green, red and orange, and the roses on the head, sculpted in rose gold with a softness that reads more like petals than metal.
