The supporting lots show the range of the sale. A second Van Cleef & Arpels ring holds a 5.54-carat marquise-cut diamond, D color and VVS2 clarity, flanked by baguette-cut shoulders, estimated at €110,000 to €170,000. A ring centered on a 9.41-carat oval Burmese sapphire, framed by marquise-, pear- and brilliant-cut diamonds of about five carats in total, carries an estimate of €100,000 to €180,000.

Color continues with a necklace signed M. Gérard, set with 18 oval Burmese rubies within diamond surrounds totaling roughly 36 carats, estimated at €80,000 to €140,000, and an articulated swag brooch holding 172.50 carats of Zambian emeralds with onyx accents and diamond pavé, estimated at €80,000 to €120,000, according to Rapaport.

Sotheby’s also highlights a Boucheron collection of more than 40 pieces, mainly finely made boxes, a Van Cleef & Arpels ring set with an oval emerald, and a carved boxwood clock depicting Day and Night as Apollo and Artemis. Signed pieces by Cartier, Bulgari, Lalaounis, Tiffany & Co., Grima, Chopard and Boucheron round out the catalogue.

Where does Van Cleef & Arpels come from?

The maison traces its story to a marriage. Estelle Arpels, the daughter of a gem dealer, married Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stonecutter, in 1895, and in 1906 the family opened its first boutique at 22 Place Vendôme in Paris, where the house still has its flagship. Over the following decades Van Cleef & Arpels became known for technical invention, most famously the Mystery Set technique patented in the 1930s, in which rubies and sapphires are set so that no metal prongs show.
